Clarity saves time

In an emergency, every second counts. Giving clear, confident, and simple instructions means others can support you quickly and correctly — whether that’s fetching a first aid kit, helping move a casualty, or calling for help. Ambiguity creates delays, and delays can cost lives.

Reassurance reduces panic

A calm voice can do wonders. People who are injured or witnessing an emergency are often scared or in shock. By speaking gently and positively, you help others feel safe and supported — and that can make a huge difference to their ability to cope.

Accurate information helps responders

When paramedics arrive, they need to make fast decisions. If you can clearly explain what’s happened, how long the casualty’s been unconscious, or any known allergies or conditions, they’re better equipped to take over. Being a calm, reliable source of information gives the emergency services a head start.

Top Tips for Communicating in a First Aid Situation:

✔️ Stay calm and speak clearly: Take a moment to breathe before giving instructions. A calm tone helps everyone stay focused.

✔️ Use short, simple sentences: Avoid technical jargon or long explanations. Say exactly what needs to happen — “Call 999”, “Get the defibrillator”, “Stay with them.”

✔️ Check for understanding: Don’t assume people have understood. Ask them to repeat your instructions or confirm what they’re doing. This is especially important in loud or chaotic environments.

✔️ Listen and observe: If the casualty is conscious, ask questions and listen carefully. They might tell you about pain, underlying conditions, or what triggered the incident. Their words, body language, and facial expressions all offer important clues.

✔️ Adapt your communication: Children, people with learning difficulties, or those who speak a different language might need extra support to understand. Use gestures, visual cues, or simplify your language when needed.
