At Haffenden Training Solutions, we believe that first aid is more than a set of practical skills—it’s a powerful way to build confidence, connection, and community. As we approach World Refugee Day on June 20th, we’re taking time to reflect on how inclusive first aid training can play a role in creating safer, more compassionate communities for everyone.

What Is World Refugee Day?

World Refugee Day is observed every year on June 20th and is organised by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). It’s a day to honour the courage, strength, and resilience of refugees—people forced to flee their home countries due to war, conflict, violence, or persecution.

It’s also a day to reflect on the kind of world we want to live in—a world where safety, dignity, and opportunity are not luxuries, but basic rights. This year’s theme focuses on solidarity and solutions, calling on all of us to take action to support refugees not just with words, but with practical steps that promote inclusion and empowerment.

Why First Aid Matters in Every Community

In the face of crisis, first aid can mean the difference between life and death. But in day-to-day life, it can also mean the difference between helplessness and hope.

For people rebuilding their lives—whether they’re new to the UK, new to a job, or new to a community—learning first aid provides more than just emergency skills. It offers:

  • Confidence to respond when someone is in need

  • Belonging through shared learning experiences

  • Trust within families, workplaces, and neighbourhoods

  • Dignity in being able to protect and care for others

By opening up first aid training to people from all backgrounds, including refugees and asylum seekers, we’re not just teaching techniques—we’re sending a clear message: you belong, and your presence matters.

What We’re Doing at Haffenden Training Solutions

At Haffenden Training Solutions, we are passionate about making our training as inclusive and accessible as possible. This means:

  • Using clear, jargon-free language and visual aids

  • Adapting our sessions for learners with English as an Additional Language (EAL)

  • Offering Mini Medics sessions to support younger learners in developing early lifesaving skills

  • Ensuring all our courses—whether it’s Emergency First Aid at Work, Paediatric First Aid, or Anaphylaxis Management—are delivered in an environment where all learners feel respected and supported

We’ve worked with learners from a wide range of backgrounds, and it’s always been clear: diverse groups strengthen the learning experience for everyone.

How You Can Help

This World Refugee Day, we encourage businesses, community groups, schools, and individuals to take action:

  • Sponsor a place on a first aid course for a refugee or asylum seeker

  • Partner with us to deliver training in your local community

  • Share our resources and help raise awareness of inclusive training options

  • Reflect on your workplace training—is it accessible to everyone who might need it?

Together, we can help build safer, stronger, and more united communities—where everyone has the knowledge and confidence to act in an emergency, regardless of their journey to get here.
